+365 days… coming back

August 25th, 2007

Another year of my life has passed by. I don’t know if I’ve grown wiser or smarter. But now, I can see where I’m standing where I want to go, and what I can do to get there. So finally, after a month-long retreat, I’m finally ready to get back to “work” again. World, here I come!

I want to be a programmer, software engineer, or developer, whichever term suits your fancy. I’ve always been fascinated by computers the moment I first set my hands on one (one of those early green monitors). I’m also very much fascinated with graphical user interfaces (GUI’s). So I’ll most probably focus on the areas of applications programming and user interface design.

Of course, I’m still invovled in my favorite Free and Open Source Software project. But since I can’t be really an everything to everybody, without spreading myself too thin, I have to limit myself a bit. At least until the time that I can take on more load. I’ve also decided to focus most of my time and effort on KDE development. Everything I’m learning now in programming is in light of contributing to KDE. On Kubuntu, my main area of concern will still be user support, both IRC and Forums, and probably a bit of documentation in the sidelines (but don’t get your hopes to high yet, nixternal :P ). I’m stil going to have to learn packaging stuff (MOTU work), but I’m afraid that will have to take 2nd priority for now, until I get a head start on my coding skills, which will be very soon anyway.

So anyway, I’m back! And expect a probably flurry of blog posts on various topics in the next few days as I get some things I’ve been thinking about out of my head.

Any big plans for the stuff you want to program? I’m always happy when I hear about programmers in the Free software world who want to do GUI stuff (since these tend to be the most visible/normal-user-excitement-inducing applications).

I tend to treat my personal todo list as a top secret thing that I don’t tell anyone about, so I can understand if you don’t feel like telling, but I (and probably others) would love to hear what you are thinking of building.

(oh, and happy birthday) (does a happy birthday mean anything when it is coming from a random person you’ve never met? :-) )

Any birthday greeting is always gratefully accepted from anyone (except from a stalker or an arch foe). So thank you very much! :)

I don’t have specific plans for GUI stuff yet. I do plan on looking into the field of usability and try to get involved in Adept, System Settings, etc. Those areas that need a bit of review. But right now, I’m just focused on learning things.

But I’m also interested in sort of trying the limits of conventional GUI practices and concepts. So KDE 4’s Plasma project interests me a lot.

Oh man you just made my day! Oh, and my hopes are way up now :)

With KDE, we could always use some documenters and can always use some coders.

I can tell you this, packaging will improve your coding skills and will allow you to actually be able to troubleshoot code rather quickly now.

I will see you when you get here :)

It’s good to have you back!

Hey, I’m also trying to program an open-source c++ app that would help me ace my tests, and is an extensible widget-based Basket-like application at the same time.

It’s called ExaR, too bad I’m programming it in GNOME, but I’m planning to switch to KDE since KDE is based more on C++, and is better documented than gtkmm, and the fact that I’ve switched to KDE, because of it rendering better fonts and widgets in my 800×600 monitor.

    Anyway, happy birthday!

    Oops… I mean Qt, not KDE… ^^
