FOSS in eGovernance and FOSS Fiesta: Day 1

March 8th, 2007

Today, I’ve attended my first ever FOSS-related (a.k.a. “geeky”) event of my entire life. It’s the First Philippine COnference on Free and Open Source Software in eGovernance. This is followed by “FOSS Fiesta” (feast/party), which is a time to showcase different FOSS projects or groups, to get to know other people, or just to hang around and have fun. There were representatives from Ubuntu Philippines, PCBSD, Google, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems (just for a short while), Joomla, Orange & Bronze, and others.

It’s not really as technical or geeky as I expected/wanted. The focus was more on introducing the use of FOSS in the “computerization” of government units. Nonetheless it’s quie an experience to finally meet in person some people you’ve been talking to in IRC for months. They’re great people in IRC and even greater in real life. The conference also sort of gave me an idea of how people from “the outside” see FOSS and how FOSS can make an impact in other non-IT sectors.

More on the details on Friday. Right now, I have to sleep and get up early for Day 2.
