Kore 0.1 Released
December 10th, 2006The first alpha release of the Kore, the design system used by Jucato’s Data Core, is now available. The Kore is a collection of styles, colors, images, and content that is used to display the site. Built using standard HTML and CSS, a consistent color palette, and light graphics, the Kore aims to provide a fast and consistent experience across browsers and platforms. Kore 0.1 is the first public release of this system, providing users a preview of future features and an opportunity for the author to receive feedback and suggestions.
Note: The Kore is not some kind of software or application. It is a name I have thought up to label my site’s design. Please do not e-mail asking for copies, source code, etc.
Features:
Features of Kore 0.1 include:
- Based on the work of Andreas Viklund
- The name “Andreas” will probably be famililar to users of WordPress. His themes are simple, elegant, and standards-compliant. The Kore is based on the Andreas08 theme.
- Color palette based on Oxygen
- Oxygen is an endeavor of the KDE 4 project to breathe new life into desktop through a refreshing visual experience. The colors used in the Kore is based on the Oxygen color palette.
- Uses standard XHTML and CSS
- The Kore tries to comply as much as possible to the XHTML and CSS standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (w3c). This will ensure that Jucato’s Date Core will display properly on standards-compliant browsers. The Kore has been tested to work on Konqueror, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer.
- Moderate use of images
- Graphics in the Kore are used moderately and only when necessary to convey an idea, a situation, or a brand. This is to ensure a fast and smooth browsing experience. An except, of course, is the Image Module, which is graphically intense by nature. Graphics are mostly in the open PNG format, which may not display alpha channels (transparency) correctly in Internet Explorer.
- Modular
- Each module is made as a separate and independent entity as much as possible. Minor changes to one module would not break the stability of the system. Each module, however, is still closely integrated with the Kore to provide a consistent interface and experience.
- Non-intrusive Google search box
- A Google search box sits quietly near the top right corner of the Kore to provide a convenient means for users to quickly search a word or phrase. The Google sesarch box opens the search results in a separate window/tab to allow users to continue exploring Jucato’s Data Core with minimal interruption.
Known Issues:
The Kore 0.1 is an alpha (pre-)release. It is actually much more a proof of concept rather than a semi-stable release. The 0.1 release was meant as a preview and a placeholder for possible features of Jucato’s Data Core. As such, while great care has been taken to make sure that a working version is available, there is no absolute guarantee of stability or consistency in the 0.1 release. There are a few known bugs with the Kore 0.1 release:
- The Image module is not yet fully integrated with the Kore.
- The Hyperlinks section is still quite empty.
- The Footer section lacks information.
- The Header, Footer, and Sidebar sections have not yet been converted into modules.
- The K Module still lacks some content.
- Icons and the Data Core logo still need to be created.
- Very little documentation.
- CSS layout does not render properly in Internet Explorer, but is entirely readable and usable.
Roadmap:
There is currently no roadmap or schedule for the next release. There is also no definite list of planned features yet. These will probably be announced in the next Kore release.
Why “Kore”?
Why did I choose the name “Kore”. Because of two simple reasons: it is really the core of the site’s design and my love for KDE. I initially called it “Core”, but realized that it could easily be confused with Jucato’s Data Core. Simply put, Kore refers to the design used in Jucato’s Data Core. Jucato’s Data Core is the site itself, including all modules.
Just some small updates, while I'm trying to get off my ass and migrate the site completely to Textpattern.
